Early Start Family Resource & Family Empowerment Centers

Early Start Family Resource Center - Special Needs Connection – For families with children ages 0-3

It can be very challenging when a parent of a newborn or a young child learns that his/her child has, or may be at risk of having, a developmental delay.  The Special Needs Connection provides emotional support, parent-to-parent networking, information and education, as well as activities to support families in this situation. The Special Needs Connection is an Early Start Resource Center which also has a wealth of materials for parents of young (age 0-3) children with special needs.

Family Empowerment Center – For families with children ages 3-22

The Changing Tides Family Services (CTFS) Family Empowerment Center will serve all of Humboldt County, including eight federally recognized Tribal Nations. The FEC will be developed in collaboration with parents, family members, and professionals in the community, with a commitment to elevating the lived experience of parent-experts in shared decision-making. The FEC will build on the strengths of the existing CTFS Early Start Family Resource Center and will prioritize parents of children or youth with disabilities as staff. Core services will include on-site and remote support through FEC Navigators; training for parents and other caregivers with a focus on all aspects of the IEP process and successful and responsive transition planning; and a commitment to building and maintaining positive collaborative relationships across multiple community service providers.
